George Orwell wrote 1984 in 1948. It was his ninth and final book. Ironically, Orwell was a self-described democratic socialist, but his writings were openly against Collectivism, in particular that form of government represented by the Soviets under Stalin. This is obvious in the theme of his novel Animal Farm. His book, 1984 reveals a future world of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and a repressive regimentation of society by the ruling elites. The totalitarian superstate Oceania is ruled by the singular Party that uses the Thought Police to persecute individuality and independent thinking. Big Brother, the dictatorial leader of Oceania, enjoys an intense cult of personality, manufactured by the party's excessive brainwashing techniques. Sound familiar?
In the past we have had a tendency to say 1984 is here when we felt there was some government over-reach. Perhaps we conservatives played the role of The Boy Who Cried Wolf a bit too often. But now, the Grey Reaper is here. The Democratic Party has used more propaganda than Orwell’s Ministry of Truth to gain power. The public has been convinced that systemic racism still exists, that the nation was founded on evil principles by evil white men, that fossil fuels are causing catastrophic climate change, and that having a national border is also evil.
There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always—do not forget this, Winston—always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever. — Part III, Chapter III, Nineteen Eighty-Four
While the Democratic Party has been thrilled and intoxicated by the power they exhibited in the defeat of Donald Trump, their quest to increase the power of government in our lives has hardly been subtle. Their oath of office, to protect the Constitution of the United States, has been violated. But power corrupts the elites, even those who professed to be Conservative Republicans once upon a time. So, the Heartland will need to be very selective in its choice of candidates in 2022 and not be swayed by charisma and false promises. Donald Trump kept his promises but failed the personality test. That personality failure carried over in the California recall. There can be no other explanation for Californians continuing to support the rulers of Oceania. Or they are just stupid.
